The bible is a book filled with miracles. From Genesis to Revelation all we see is God’s amazing miracles spread all across the bible. From the miracle of creation to the miracle of Christ’s resurrection we find many miracles in the bible. But what exactly is a miracle and does it happen in our world today?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word miracle as “: an unusual or wonderful event that is believed to be caused by the power of God” The word miracle itself was created to define the amazing things that only God can do. So if you were to believe in miracles it stands to reason that you must believe in the source of all miracles, God himself.
There is no real proof that any human being can perform any miracle on their own without the power of God. If any man claims to be a miracle worker on their own without God being involved it is best to be skeptical. A miracle involves something supernatural that can only be done by the power of God.
Daniel says in Daniel 4:3, “How great are His miracles, and how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom,
and His dominion is from generation to generation.” Daniel was someone who had witnessed the miracles of his God firsthand. He was saved from the mouths of hungry lions and along with his friends was saved from a burning furnace.
Job 5:19 says “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted” This is true of our God. He is in the business of saving his people from calamity and harm’s way. In the Old Testament, we have many examples of God showing his supernatural power like when he turned the Nile River into blood, parted the red sea, send manna from heaven, stop the sun from moving, brought down the walls of Jericho, heal Naaman of leprosy, the list goes on.
In the New Testament, we also see miracles performed by Jesus himself like when he turned water into wine, raised people from the dead, gave the blind sight, made the deaf hear, make the lame walk, drive the demons, calm the sea, feed the multitudes with a few loaves of bread and fish, the list goes on “. In fact John says in John 20:25 “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.”
Miracles are associated with our God. He is the source of all miracles. So are miracles happening today? Of course, they are. As long as God exists then miracles exist. Hebrews 2:4 says “God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.” Our God is a wonder-working God and the laws of nature and science do not apply to him because He is the one who put them in motion. He created everything and put the natural laws in place. He can bend them as he pleases for his people.
Miracles are real but without God, there is no miracle. The real question is not whether we believe in miracles but if we believe in God. Believing in God is believing in a miracle. In perhaps the greatest miracle of all God gave his son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins so that we can all be forgiven for our sins. Jesus suffered death on the cross and came back to life on the third day. If you do not believe in any other miracle in this world except for the miracle of the resurrection of Christ then it will change your life for eternity.
