In Matthew 7:24-27 we hear Jesus talk about the parable of the wise and foolish builders. “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Using this parable Jesus explains the dangers of living our life without Christ. Jesus is comparing the wise man who built his house upon a rock to those who follow Jesus and put their faith in him. Those who trust in the word of God are able to withstand everything that the storms of life bring their way because their foundation is based on Christ. Those who live a life without following Christ and his teachings have nothing to lean against when the storms of life come and because the foundation of their life is based on earthly things it will come crashing down when faced with real challenges in life.
There are multiple bible verses that talk about God being a rock in our life. Psalm 18:2 says “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Isaiah 26:4 says “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.” Psalm 62:7 says “On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.”
If our foundation is built upon Christ the rock then nothing in life can shake us. He is the everlasting rock that we can completely trust. If we put our trust in anything other than Christ then sooner or later that thing is bound to fail us. Nothing in this world can take the place of Christ. Matthew 16:26 says “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” Without Christ, our life is like the foolish man who built their house on sand. When the storms of life come we will not be prepared and will be lost without Christ.
Let us remember that our foundation is always Jesus Christ. No matter what happens in our life if Christ is with us then we can always face it with him by our side. We can only do this by putting our faith in Christ and by praying and reading the bible. Psalm 62:5-6 says “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” For those who build their foundation in Christ, they will forever be like a fortress that is never shaken even when faced with all the storms of life. Their house is built on solid ground and will be able to withstand the trials and tribulations that this life has to offer.
