Unity in the Church Body

The Bible calls all believers to live together in unity and also worship together in unity in the Church. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:10 “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” This is something that we should strive for as Christians but as most Christians find out this is not always the case in most churches.

Romans 3:23  says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” This verse is pretty clear and true that there is not a single person on this Earth who has not sinned. So what happens when you take a bunch of imperfect sinners and put them in a church together? Chances are not everyone is going to agree with each other. There will be quarrels, there will be disagreements, and there will be grumbling and arguing. That is just part of being imperfect human beings in an imperfect world. So do not expect any Church to be perfect. There is not one Church in this world that is perfect in spite of the fact that we worship a perfect God. Jesus Christ is perfect but no human being is perfect and as a result, no Church run by human beings is ever going to be perfect.

So how does one strive for unity in any Christian Church filled with imperfect sinners? The blueprint for this is found in Colossians 3:12-17 where Paul says “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Paul says that love is the answer to unity in Church. If we can learn to love one another as God loves us then we can be united through the love of Jesu Christ.

1 John 4:16-18 says “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world, we are like Jesus.  There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”  Love is the answer to unity in Church. Love conquers all. Just like the Love of Jesus saves us all from our sins. So next time you hear about disunity in the Church, just strive for love and pray for peace and love and unity among all believers. Love is the answer to unity sounds like some cliche from a Hollywood movie but that is in fact the very thing that is going to unite Christians together.  If we have love in our hearts then we all will be very clear about what we want to do in Church and with other people in our lives. If we do not have love in our hearts then we should pray for it as Christians and as a Church.
