There is a very catchy song from the ’80s called “Don’t Worry Be Happy“. It was one of the biggest hits during the time and every time you heard the song, it used to put you in a happy mood. The message of this song is very simple.
The solution for worry = be happy.
In real life, however, this is far from the truth. When things go wrong in our life we find it really hard to be happy. Our happiness, it seems is somehow tied to everything in our life going well.
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” is a well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. The goal of being happy however is something that a lot of people never achieve. How many times have we seen many rich, successful talented people take their own lives because they could never find happiness in this world? These are people who on the surface, seemed to have it all except they could never find happiness. Why is this so?
Jesus has a whole different approach to dealing with worry. In the bible Jesus says in Matthew 6:11-33: “So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.”
Jesus’s cure for worry is to seek the kingdom of God and not the things of this world. How does one seek the kingdom of God? Only through Jesus! Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus’s solution for worry = Come to Jesus.
Getting to know your creator and savior is the only way to true happiness. If your happiness is tied to anything else in this world, sooner or later it will fade. Once Jesus is in your life your approach to worry will also change. Once this happens, the song in your head will always be “Don’t Worry Be Happy in Jesus“.
