It has been more than a year since the world has been taken over by the COVID-19 Coronavirus. Millions of lives lost, thousands of businesses closed, families left homeless, livelihoods lost and the world as we know it has completely changed. During this time, the primary question on everyone’s mind has been “where was God during this pandemic?”
Romans 5:12 says “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” From this verse, we know that we all live in a broken and sinful world and there will always be death and destruction. This has been the case since Adam and Eve sinned against God. Diseases even global pandemics are simply the result of living in a broken world.
If God is all-powerful then why didn’t He stop the pandemic and save millions of people from dying? That is a question that only God can answer. We know from the bible that God’s ways are different from our ways. Isaiah 55:8-9 says “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” From this verse, we know for sure that no man can ever tell you why God allowed the pandemic to happen. Only God knows for sure.
This does not mean that God has abandoned those who put their trust in him during this pandemic. The bible says in Isaiah 41:10; “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God is there for us during this pandemic. He promises to strengthen us with his right hand. This is the very nature of God. He never leaves us, He never forsakes us. He is with us all the time!
So where was God during the pandemic? In the same place, He has always been, right next to you holding you with his hand!
He has a plan behind all of this. Many people have come closer to God as a result of this pandemic. Those who never thought about God are now seeking God. God always wants to get your attention so you can put your focus on him. Global pandemic! God, you have our attention! Where do we go from here? We just need to trust in him as it says in Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight.”
