God and Money

There are many bible verses that talk about money and how to deal with money. Money is something that we cannot live without in this world. Money also has the power to get in the way of your relationship with your God. Many Christians have been enticed by the charm of money and have ended up messing up their relationship with God. Once you accept Jesus Christ into your life the way you look at money changes completely. Money used to be the thing in your life that provided comfort, peace, and power that changes once you accept Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 6:10 says. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” The bible warns us against loving money more than loving the relationship with God. It is okay to want money in our lives and to have material possessions in life. The key as a Christian is not to be tempted by the love of money. Money should never be our first love. It should be Jesus.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 that “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Jesus himself has warned us that loving money is going to take us away from our relationship with God. Jesus himself was betrayed by Judas Iscariot over thirty pieces of silver. Judas was willing to give us his entire relationship with his savior all for the sake of money. If it happened to someone in Jesus’s inner circle it can quite easily happen to any one of us. In the case of Judas, his love for money ended up so badly that he ended up hanging himself in the end.

In Matthew 6:19-21 Jesus says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Jesus talks about not spending time on materialistic possessions or treasures that we cannot really take to heaven. Jesus is not against having things in this world but he warns us against building treasures on earth cause they could be taken away from us at any moment. The only thing that will last is our relationship with Christ.

Many people have chosen money over God, seeking fame and fortune and success by doing everything in their lives to attain it but at what cost? Matthew 16:26 says “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” So what does this mean? Are Christians not to become rich or wealthy? Are we not to be financially secure and be well off and provide a comfortable life for our family? No that is not what the bible says but instead the bible says to not worry about these things but to seek the kingdom of God.

In Matthew 6:25-33, Jesus says, “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” The bible simply warns us to not be tempted by the love money and things of this world but to seek his kingdom first. As Christians, we need to examine our lives routinely to see if we choose to love money and materialistic possessions over our God. You may not think this is important but it is something that the bible warns against very seriously. The love for money, fame, fortune, success can very easily take us away from our first love, Jesus and that is not a good place for any Christian to be in.
