Is Halloween only for the Heathen?

It is that time of the year again when people dress in costumes and take part in a fall festival called Halloween. This seemingly innocent festival has roots in paganism and has many Christians divided on whether they should even take part in any Halloween activities at all. This is a controversial subject and many people have their own theories and reasons as to why Christians should not take part in any Halloween celebrations.

As always the truth is always found in the bible. Halloween is not explicitly mentioned in the bible. So how do Christians know what to do with Halloween? 1 John 2:15-17 says “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever” From this bible verse, it is very clear that we as Christians have a choice to make when it comes to Halloween also. Are we going to be faced with something different on Halloween day that we don’t face every day as Christians in a world filled with sin?

Are you doing something on Halloween that goes against what is in the bible? Sure Halloween has been associated with satanism and the occult and all other crazy stuff but it really depends on where your mind is and what you do on Halloween. Are you out there worshipping satan and practicing witchcraft with your kids on Halloween? Or are you merely playing dress-up in wholesome costumes and getting to know your neighbors?

When Paul went to Athens during his ministry he saw an altar and on it were inscribed the words “TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.” In their ignorance, the Greeks had set up an altar to a God that they thought they might have missed out on somehow.  Paul uses their ignorance as an opportunity to share the truth about Jesus Christ. We as Christians have an amazing opportunity to do the same to people on Halloween day some of whom you might only see once a year. If Satan and his goons are out trick or treating then we definitely need some Christians out there on patrol anyway. So go out have fun and take your kid trick or treating in wholesome costumes. You can rest assured that your relationship with your savior is not in jeopardy because of what costume you wear or what candy you eat on Halloween day.

If you are still worried that your family is condemned to hell because of what you did on Halloween then this bible verse is for you. Romans 8:38-39 says “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” So even if Satan and his sidekicks get some people to follow them on Halloween, you have nothing to worry about as true Christians. If you stay true to what it means to be a Christian and if you believe in Jesus Christ and do then nothing on Earth (yeah not even Halloween day) can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So remember you are allowed to have fun with your family on Halloween. Not doing anything just means that Satan gets to run this holiday. We can show our love as Christians to our fellow human beings but just showing up and saying Hi. Do you want to be the type of Christian who shut their doors to your neighbors and their kids when you can put a smile on someone’s face by just giving out some candy? Remember nothing that happens on Halloween day is different from any other day on this Earth. It is what you choose to do as Christians on Halloween day that matters. You can do something that glorifies your God on Halloween day. Do you think Satan and his homies take a break on Christmas day so why should Christians not do anything on Halloween day? It is our day to show hope, love, and kindness to our neighbors the same way that our Saviour intended it.
