Lessons learnt from the Story of Joseph

One of the most popular stories that is taught in Sunday school is the story of Joseph. It is an amazing redemption story. Joseph was betrayed by his own brothers and sold as a slave ending up in prison until finally reaching the position of governor of all Egypt. This story even has a twist with Joseph being able to help the brothers who had betryaed him in the end. Joseph realized something that we as Christians tend to forget sometimes which is this God lets things happen sometimes to accomplish his plan. Joseph even told his brothers this when he realized what God had done in Genesis 50:20 “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

As a regular Christian, you might look at the story of Joseph and go, “Oh well but Joseph was one of God’s chosen heroes!” What are the chances that it can happen to me? The Bible says in 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Once we accept Jesus Christ we all become part of the chosen group of people. We are just as precious to God as Joseph ,Moses,David or any other of the amazing heroes of the bible.

When we read about the amazing story of  Joseph we do not realize that this could well be our own story. We have all felt like Joseph sometime in our life. Joseph was betrayed by his own family! Yeah we can relate to that? Joseph was accused wrongly for things he didnt do! We can relate to that! Joseph felt trapped and hopeless in prison! We have all felt that way in our life at times.  Sure Joseph was dealing with the Pharaoh of Egpyt and royalty but we might well be dealing with our own pharaohs in life. The lesson to take from the story of Joseph is that the same God that was with Joseph during his trials is also with us during our own trials in life. The same God that brought Joseph out of his trials and used the evil intentions of his brothers for the good of all can do the same for you in your life.

James 1:2-4 says ” Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” This is the story of Joseph he faced trials of many kinds but in the end God god the glory through Joseph. The same might be the case with you. You might be going through trials of many kinds by keep your faith in God cause without doubt God has a plan for you. He is the same God of Joseph and he many not make you governor of Egypt but He has His own plan of deliverance and redemption for you.
