The gift of Christmas

This Christmas tradition of gift-giving is sometimes traced back to the three wise men who brought gifts to the baby Jesus when he was born.  Giving gifts to each other on Christmas day reminds us of that day when gifts were given to our Lord Jesus Christ. The real gift however is the gift that Jesus gave us “The Gift of Salvation”. Perhaps the greatest gift of all.

When we celebrate Christmas every year sometimes we forget about the reason for the celebration. Christmas becomes more about gift-giving and getting together with our family and having a good meal together. These are all good things but we have to make sure that they do not take away from celebrating Jesus Christ himself. If Christ was not born on Christmas day then what hope would there be for anyone?

The bible says in Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God and the result of that sin is death and eternal separation from our God. Only by the grace of God, we all have a chance to receive salvation through Jesus Christ. A perfect gift from above.  This is the reason for our celebration. This is the reason for our Joy. This is the reason we celebrate Christmas every year.

We spend big money every year to make sure our families and our significant others are happy with the gift we give them. Most folks are not happy with their gifts as you can tell by the number of returns in stores right after Christmas day. Jesus Christ was born so that he can give us the gift that we truly need. It may not be the gift we are looking for but finding salvation through Jesus Christ is the only gift that we need and the only gift that will satisfy us.

Jesus calls himself the gift of God when talking to the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:10, “Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” The woman went looking for water but found the gift of God instead.

So as we all celebrate Christmas let us focus our eye on Jesus and remember the price he paid on the cross for our sins. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The keyword in this verse is “gave”. If God had not given us the Gift of Jesus Christ we would all be still lost in our sins without any hope. The true Gift of Christmas is Jesus Christ!’
