In a historic decision made this week the U.S. Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade saying that a woman’s constitutional right to abortion no longer exists. This landmark decision as expected divided those that were pro-life and those that were pro-choice across the country. The topic of abortion came back to the forefront again in the News and on social media everywhere. As usual, everyone has their own opinion on the issue of abortion. Preachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, youtubers, everyone seems to have their own opinion about abortion. What does the word of God, The Bible, say about abortion?
To understand what the bible says about abortion we first need to know the meaning of the words abortion and conception. Let us see how the dictionary defines them. Abortion is defined as “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” Conception is defined as “the action of conceiving a child or of a child being conceived.” From these two definitions, it is very clear that any kind of abortion is the deliberate termination of a child that is brought to life when conceived in the mother’s womb.
The word abortion is not specifically mentioned in the bible mostly because the word itself was not around during biblical times. We know from science and from nature that the conception of life happens in the mother’s womb. The bible mentions life in the womb in multiple verses.
- Psalm 139:13: “For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
- Job 31:15: “Did not the One who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same God form us both in the womb”
- Psalm 22:10: “I was given over to You at birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.”
- Jeremiah 1:5: “I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born.”
From these Bible verses, one thing is very clear, God conceived you in your mother’s womb with a plan. He created every human being to be conceived in their mother’s womb so they can have life and walk in the plan that God had for their life. This is not any human being’s opinion this is what is clearly mentioned in the bible. Now that we know that it is God who decides who gets conceived in the mother’s womb, who determines who can end that life? The mother? The State? The US Supreme court? The bible is very clear that you were set apart by God so that you can have a life and a purpose. So shouldn’t God be the only one who decides what happens to that life that he created? Isn’t the mother’s womb just a vessel to bring into this world what God has created?
Jesus himself was brought into this world by divine conception. We see in Luke 1:31 “Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus” The mother’s womb is a very sacred place and the mother is used by God to bring life into this world. Does one bad decision made by someone give us the right to take away the life that God conceived in the womb? There are very specific situations that people often used to justify abortion like rape or instances where the life of the mother may be in danger if the baby is not aborted. These are not the norm but the exceptions and at the end of the day whoever is involved in making the decision has to take into account whether taking the life of a child is the only feasible option in these circumstances.
These type of precarious moral situations is exactly why we need God to guide us and show us the best way. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” God is always there to guide us in tough moral situations. Abortion in the end is a moral dilemma just like all the other moral dilemmas we face in this world. The real question with abortion, in the end, is deciding if taking the life of an unborn infant is justifiable in the eyes of God? Is abortion truly the only way out or can we trust God to show us another way?
