wisdom

What does the bible says about wisdom?

The word wisdom is mentioned over 350 times in the bible. It is mentioned both in the New Testament and in the Old Testament. What is wisdom? Why do we need wisdom in this world? Why do we need to seek it according to the bible? Let us take a look at what the bible says about wisdom and how it is defined in the bible.

The dictionary defines wisdom as “the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise”. According to the world, wisdom is something that is attained through experience, knowledge, and good judgment. The Bible describes wisdom as something that is not attained but given to us by God. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” According to this verse if we lack wisdom we need to go to God who will give it to us freely.

There are also 2 kinds of wisdom according to the bible. One is worldly wisdom and the other is Godly wisdom.  1 Corinthians 2:13 says “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.” The Bible here talks about wisdom that is imparted to us by the spirit which is much greater than human wisdom.  The only way to get this type of wisdom is to accept Jesus Christ and receive the holy spirit.  1 Corinthians 3:19 says, “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”. The wisdom that comes from God through the spirit is something that the world cannot understand. We are given the ability to know how to act and think in circumstances that might confuse those with only worldly wisdom.

So why is it important to receive Godly wisdom and act with godly wisdom for Christians in this world? Paul explains it clearly in 1 Colossians 1:9-10 “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God” This is the main reason why we need Godly wisdom so we may live a life worthy of the Lord to grow in the knowledge of God. James 3:13 says “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”  Having godly wisdom in our life is an important part of living our lives as Christians. We should pray at all times for God to give us wisdom so that we can live our best life for God in this world.
